Abstract

The research set out to carry out an appraisal of the thoughts of Aquinas regarding tyranny, resistance and the common good. It sought to determine any possible implications and connection to Nigeria's political system. The research used the expository and analytical method to analyse data and arrive at conclusions. Data for research was from secondary sources from library and internet materials. The research found out that the views regarding tyranny, resistance and the common good are issues that have been dominant over the centuries to this day. It was also discovered that all through her years from independence to this day, Nigeria has been suffering a crisis of governance reinforced by authoritarianism. While Aquinas despised tyrannical regimes and encouraged resistance where necessary, the research discovered, that most Nigerians have unfortunately been complicit in fostering these kinds of government in the rst place. Even though they may have appeared in some cases helpless to do otherwise. The study concludes that it is not too late for Nigerians to rise up and demand for justice, equity and good governance.
