BEYOND CONSENT: RETHINKING ROUSSEAU FOR A NIGERIAN DEMOCRACY
Abstract
This study explores Jean-Jacques Rousseau's concept of consent and its relevance in the context of the Nigerian democratic system. Rousseau's theory emphasizes active participation in a social contract, a vital aspect of democracy. In an ideal democratic society, the commitment to "We the people" extends beyond the government to include all significant stakeholders. Applying Rousseau's ideas to Nigeria underscores the urgent necessity for inclusive and participatory governance. His argument that the social contract gives life to the body politic raises crucial questions about Nigeria's existence and nationhood that demand thoughtful consideration.
