Befriending the Earth Towards a Doxological Approach to the Environment
Abstract
When the media speak of climatic change and the deterioration of the ozone layer, Africans, Nigerians in particular, tend to think that it is a problem of the West. [ once heard a friend saying: “those people over there create problems that do not exist”, I struggled to make him observe that seasons are no longer regular; the harmattan has almost disappeared; in our cities the blue sky and the moonlight have disappeared in layers of smoke, and that sicknesses have multiplied because of the polluted air we breathe in everyday. The reality is that from day to day, the world experiences an alarming environmental and ecological degradation. This was emphasized during the recently concluded Second Synod for Africa.' The tragedy is that many people are not aware of what is happening and those who are do not have the courage to face the challenge.
