Abstract
The phrase 'preferential option for the poor' is a demand that priority be given to the service of the poor and the disadvantaged in the society. This phrase became pronounced in the teachings of the Church after it has been institutionalized by the Latin American Bishops’ Conference in Medellin in 1968, and in Puebla in 1979.> That notwithstanding, concern for the poor has a long history in the ministry and life of the Church. Christ acknowledged this as an indispensable part of his ministry as is evident in Luke 4.18-21. He also showed its significance in his public life and ministry.
