HOLY SPIRIT, FATHER OF THE POOR
Abstract
The Sequence of Pentecost, “called the Golden Sequence™, stands out as one of the most beautiful and enriching elements of the Christian liturgy of the Pentecost celebration. It is one of the best known hymns to the Holy Spirit which tradition is not very exact about its origin; opinions are divided between those who attribute it to Pope Innocent III and Cardinal Stephen Langton, the Archbishop of Canterbury, who died 1228. Speaking about this sequence, Michael O’Carroll says: “this composition marks a high point in Latin hymnody, the most perfect realization of the Sequence form. The verse form and phrasing are flawless and the sentiment so strong and pure matches doctrinal insights that are sure and uplifting”. Among other things, this sequence contains an unusual affirmation about the Holy Spirit, namely, the designation of the Third Divine Person as “the Father of the Poor”.
