POVERTY ALLEVIATION IN AFRICA: A CHRISTIAN RESPONSE

The times talk to us of so much poverty in the world and this is a scandal. Poverty in the world is a scandal. In a world where there 1s so much wealth, so many resources to cater for everyone, it is disheartening that there are so many hungry children, that there are so many children without an education, so many poor persons. Poverty today 1s a cry.' The struggle against poverty has been, for the past two decades, an utmost concern of the various world administrations. The above observation made by Pope Francis is apt as today we live in a world where majority of the citizens are living in pitiable conditions: with no water, no electricity, bad roads, no shelter, no hospitals, no security, and no food. And the story seems to be everywhere the same. The misery and poverty in the world is now a refrain in a song sung daily by millions of people all over the world to whom the situation presents a particularly pitiable scenario. Thus, one could surmise that our contemporary world showcases a paradox: the world is rich, but its people are poor. Even though this same scenario is noticeable in all parts of the world, the situation in Africa seems to be more appalling, In neither of the development
