Résumé
Parable is a proverb inform of a short story. It is an aspect of Igbo culture that is used to teach important things in life. Igbo people also use parable to portray wisdom and good reasoning. It is true that parable is very important in the life of the Igbo people but it has become part of an aspect of Igbo culture that is becoming moribund because of relegation. The aim of this study therefore is to explain parable, to compile various parables and give their philosophical meanings and also proffer solutions on how to preserve it. A compilation of this kind will give room for reference and wisdom accumulation for nation building. Data for the study was collected through oral interview and observation. Findings show that parable boost people’s wisdom. It is one of the skills used by orators. This study will help the younger and upcoming generations in the choice of good life and show of wisdom in their daily affairs. Preservation of parables is necessary because it helps in the retaining of cultural heritage handed over by the progenitors.
