THE MORPHOLOGICAL STRUCTURE OF IGBO AND GERMAN VERBS: A COMPARATIVE STUDY

Resumen

This work focuses on a comparative study of morphological structures of Igbo and German verbs. The study focuses on the inflections and the word formation of the two languages. In inflections, the research investigates the present, past, past, future and imperative formations of verbs in Igbo and German. While in the area of word formation the research considers the various combinations of verbs, e.g. verb plus verb (V +V) and the combination of verb + noun (V+N) in Igbo and German language. The research data was collected from some commonly used verbs in Igbo and German. As a framework for the study, the Comparative approach is adopted. Furthermore, this research investigates the word formation pattern and inflection of verbs in the two languages. From the data analyzed, the study reveals the different patterns in the morphological structure of Igbo and German verbs
