LEVERAGING DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY FOR IGBO LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT

Digital technology has revolutionized communication, education, and cultural preservation, and offered unprecedented opportunities for the development of non-global languages like Igbo. This paper explores how various digital technologies, including mobile applications, social media platforms, e-learning platforms, artificial intelligence, and immersive technologies like virtual reality and augmented reality, can be harnessed to promote and preserve the Igbo language. By examining existing digital resources, such as language learning websites, interactive apps, and digital dictionaries, as well as successful initiatives, this study demonstrates the potential of these tools to enhance language learning and cultural engagement. Furthermore, it addresses challenges such as limited internet access, device availability, and financial constraints, proposing solutions like expanding broadband infrastructure, providing low-cost devices, and securing diverse funding sources. Future directions emphasize the importance of emerging technologies, strategic collaborations, and a sustainable approach to ensure a vibrant and enduring future for the Igbo language. The paper concludes with a call to action for stakeholders, including educational institutions, tech companies, governments, and community groups, to collaboratively foster a digitally-empowered ecosystem that supports the continued vitality of the Igbo language in the digital age.
